1986’s An American Tail is an animated film that is still fabulous today - my kids love it. Fievel the Mouse comes to America from Russia, because “there are no cats in America.” It was produced by Steven Spielberg, and Dom Deluise does the voice of a helpful cat. It also features the song “Somewhere, Out There” which was sung at just about every high school and community college choir concert I attended.

Penny Machine

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Have you ever smashed a penny? I remember when I was a kid on vacations it seemed like everywhere I went they have the penny press machines. You remember them. You put a penny in and turned a big hand crank and it would spin out a flat penny with an icon or theme that you choose. I remember when I was up north in Michigan they had one where you could make a buffalo, duck and a wolverine and I adored these machines. They were a blast as a kid and I wish I would run into one locally. You can buy a penny machine for pretty cheap and put it anywhere you want. It is a great investment.

Witness is one of two 80s movies that made Kelly McGillis’s career. Top Gun was the other one. Harrison Ford is a detective investigating a murder; Kelly McGillis is an Amish widow whose son accidentally witnessed the murder. I love the scene where they dance in the garage to “Don’t Know Much ‘Bout History.” Viggo Mortensen had a small role - this was his first movie.
